Nicole Virzi (age 29, born in 1994) is a fifth-year Ph.D. student in clinical psychology within the SDSU/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program. She stands accused of a grave offense in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she was babysitting in a local neighborhood.

Virzi was arrested following a tragic incident involving infant twins under her care. Allegedly, while babysitting, one of the twins suffered fatal injuries, and the other sustained significant harm, leading to hospitalization.

Specifically, Virzi faces charges related to the murder of six-and-a-half-week-old Leon Katz at his residence in Pittsburgh. Authorities charge Virzi with murder, citing injuries including a skull fracture and brain bleeds detected by a CT scan.

Virzi has denied any wrongdoing

Following her arrest, Nicole Virzi has maintained her innocence through her attorney, David Shrager, who emphasized her lack of prior criminal record.

Shrager stated, “Our client denies these allegations. She is a loving person and a friend to these people and would never harm anyone’s child, let alone theirs.”

The incident unfolded while Virzi was babysitting in a Pittsburgh neighborhood. She was caring for twin infants while their parents were at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh with one of the twins.

Virzi reported noticing an injury on the groin area of one twin and subsequently called 911 after hearing the baby scream.

According to Virzi’s account to the police, she briefly left the room to retrieve a baby bottle from the kitchen and returned to find the baby on the floor, having fallen out of a bouncer seat.

She asserted that she was the one who initially observed the injury on the other twin and alerted the parents.

Medical experts involved in the case described the injuries sustained by both infants as consistent with inflicted trauma rather than accidental harm. This assessment was included in court documents, highlighting the severity of the charges against Virzi.

Currently, Virzi is held without bail at the Allegheny County Jail, facing charges of homicide, aggravated assault, and endangering the welfare of children. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 28.
